What this calculation rests on. The first half is hard: milk with antibiotic residue cannot enter the tank, so every antibiotic treatment you avoid is milk you do deliver. We do not count the full yield there — a sick cow gives less, and only that reduced volume actually goes down the drain. The second half is an estimate: the sooner and the more precisely you treat, the smaller the chance that a cow is left with a permanently high cell count. Such a cow gives less every day for the rest of her production. We count that gain over a single 305-day lactation, while in practice such a cow often stays longer. How many cases can be handled without antibiotics differs from farm to farm; agree that figure with your vet. A culture result may only lead to a different treatment within a herd health plan signed off by your vet.
